How do former D&D players who become teachers get PD? Through a virtual conference in Second Life of course!
I know of no other profession besides teaching where constant professional development is required and necessary. Teachers are already not paid enough (poor execution, but what Arne says is still true), and quite often, we have to foot the bill for professional growth ourselves. This has such huge potential for the future of professional development and collaboration.

Adding to the possibilities of professional development through PBS Teacherline, mentioned in the last newsletter, Miss Rachel passed along this information about a set of courses that address the Common Core State Standards and STEM. Interested? Let us know!

In 1990, the Virginia Department of Education entered into a unique partnership with George Mason University and the U.S. Department of State to provide highly trained, licensed teachers in critical shortage areas in K-12 schools overseas. This initiative, called FAST TRAIN Programs, combines the talents of George Mason University’s faculty with the exceptional requirements and standards for Virginia State’s teacher license, FAST TRAIN has prepared over 1,000 teachers in the past 20 years who not only teach U.S. citizens living overseas but who often return to use their culturally enriched experiences and professional talents to instruct our children in Virginia and other states. FAST TRAIN offers certificates and degrees in the areas of special education, elementary education, English as a second language education, and advanced IB studies, and all of these degrees are attainable through a combination of live and online courses. I’m not just a promoter, but I’m also a student, so let me know if you’d like more information!
There are many other programs of similar format, so if you have more information that you’d like to pass along, let us know!

PBS TeacherLine’s high quality, standards-based graduate-level courses offer teachers the professional development opportunities they need in an accessible online format that makes learning fun, flexible and collaborative. You can earn graduate credit, PDPs, or CEUs while gaining strategies and resources to bring directly to your classroom. There are a variety of courses to choose from, and this lady seems to have loved it. Miss Rachel will be starting a course soon, and everyone loves a study partner!
